Best constallation in the aviary?

by Josefin

I was wondering which constellation would be the best in my aviary. Now I have 9 Gouldians in total, living together with 3 canaries and 2 society finches. I have 3 hens and 6 male, mostly because Goulds can be a bit hard to find around here and especialy hens, (for some reason). My goal is to have a more equal amount of hens and males when I can get hold of some more:) But back to my question, is it in any way too stressful for the 3 hens to be with that many males? It doesn't seem like it, but I just wanted to make sure... And if I were to put in some nests in the future, to colony breed them, would that be wrong? Does it have to be equal pairs?

Thanks so much!

Hi Josefin,

Sorry for the delay in responding. Since I live in the U.S. and on the east coast and there has been a terrible hurricane here, I have been without electridty until today.

What workd for me was to think of my Gouldians as being people instead of birds. They each have their own individual personalities. If there is no squabbling or aggressive behaviour, then all is well no matter what the combination.

Sometimes when nest boxes are set up in colonies, with an uneven number of the sexes the males may challange each other to win the lady they want. It may take a little while for the birds to choose their partners and settle down in pairs. Again, like people, I found that watching their behaviour is the only way I could know if there was going to be trouble.

Hope this helps, Jeanie
