Breeding Yellowbacks with Greenbacks and/or Bluebacks

Hi,

This is a great article and I am so glad I found it. I have two beautiful Gouldians - one is an orange headed yellowback female and the other is a red headed silverback male.

Can they breed and if they do, what is the most likely color combination?

Thank you so much for any help you can give on this.

Susie

Hi Susie,

Yes they can breed. Unless you know the genetic background of their parents, there is no way to predict what colors your chicks will be for certain. Even if you did know the colors of the parents I could not predict for you. It all has to do with which mutated genes were passed on to them. Silver is a recessive trait and so is blue, but unless your yellow has a recessive trait for blue or silver there cannot be any blue or silver chicks. My guess would be yellows and/or possibly green backs. Do please let us know how breeding goes for your pair. I would enjoy knowing what colors your pair produces. Will definitely be beautiful!!!

Best Wishes, Jeanie
