Can you please tell me if it is normal for the parents to leave the nestbox when the hatchlings are one week old? They are still feeding the babies, just not sleeping in the box.

Hi Tamra,

My Gouldian pairs did not stay in their boxes every minute. The fact that you know the chicks are being fed leads me to conclude that the parents have not abandoned their young. There isn't anything that I would recommend you do for the chicks at this point. Try not to worry. I know it can be scary, but the only thing I would do were I in your position would be to wait it out. Best Wishes, Jeanie

So far the parents are feeding. They are so precious.

I have a full time job. Would love to hand raise but don't know how many times a day it would take. Every three hours is possible, but more is improbable.

Thanks!!!

Parents leaving the nest
by: Terry Wallace

If parents ignore the hatchlings, it will be obvious if 4 hours go by and you do not see the sacs filled with food.
Btw, this is an ideal age if you choose to remove them and start a hand feeding program. It is difficult but incredibly rewarding. There are many "how to" web sites available.

The mother and father continue to feed the babies who were hatched 8 days ago. They are getting louder each day. I have chosen to leave them alone. Mom and dad no longer sleep in the nest box. I only checked twice. Once when two were pink and just hatched, and six days later to get retrieve any eggs and count them. Four little green gray chicks. Thanks again.
