male/female colouring

Are the male & female both of equal colouring, meaning do they both have bright vibrant colors or are the females lighter & paler... If they are both the same how do you distinguish the male from the female ?

Judy,
The males definitely have richer and more vibrant colors than the females. Females look dull when compared. It can still sometimes be hard to tell if the birds cannot be seen together. The males will stand up very erect, sing and hop about doing a great courting dance. Females don't sing or do the hopping. Also, males will have two very long central tail feathers when they are of a mind to mate.
Hope this helps, Jeanie
