I have a pair of lady gouldians that are both missing some facial feathers, one around his eyes and one above her beak, any ideas? Mites? The mite spray says not to use around the face. I once had a parakeet with mites on his beak and I used Vaseline? What do you think?
Sorry for the delay in answering your question. I did reply, but I must have done something wrong. I just noticed that your question came back and the answer did not show up on the website.
Could be mites. I have never put Vaseline on a Gouldian because it is a petroleum product. I have used a drop of vegetable oil on the vent of an egg bound hen. I know that is an entirely different problem, but that is the only kind of ointment I have ever used with my birds. I have used a Pyrethrin based powder to get rid of insect pests. I put a small amount of it in a paper bag and then put the bird in the same bag for a few minutes. There is no need to shake it. Just the normal movement of the bird in the bag is enough to apply it.
Hope this helps, Jeanie
