should i separate my birds?

Hello, I bought my first pair of gouldian finches last year, and they're healthy and happy and i would really like to breed them. I've had trouble so far though, the male seems very interested in the female but she seems to be very aloof and not interested, i keep them in a large flight cage along with several pairs of canaries and their cage is about 64inx21inx64H. Should i give them their own cage to better their chances of breeding? the spare cage i have is about half of that, about 32inx21x60in

Hi Camilo,

Giving them their own cage would definitely be something to try. There are some other factors that need to be provided to get Gouldians to breed. The idea is to replicate what their environment would be like were it spring in Australia. Temperatures need to be in the high 70's or low 80's, 14 hours of full spectrum light each day and the correct dietary supplements. After all that is taken care of they may still not breed successfully. She may not be attracted to him.
Best Wishes, Jeanie
