soaked seed

hi Jean Dan here do you give your birds soaked seed and if so do you make your own, I have talked to some breeders on the subject and they seem divided, the ones that don,t, say it can go off and if a bird picks up a bad seed it could be fatal I soak my own but not with a rest full mind yours faithfully DAN from south wales u k

Hi Dan,

Incorrectly prepared soaked seed can be a horrific killer. It's been my experience that sprouted or soaked seed can turn sour quickly unless a sanitizer of some kind is used in the first soaking. I never thought of a single seed turning bad, just that naturally existing bacteria can and will grow in the warm and moist environment so it needs to be killed before it can grow. I used to use a small amount of bleach in the first rinse, but now I understand there is a purifier sold for human babies that is safe to use. However, I purchase seed that is specifically marketed for soaking and sprouting for my birds and I follow the instructions on the packaging to the letter. I do not ever use the same seed that I feed the birds for soaking.

Hope this helps, Jeanie

hi Jean, just a reply to our last conversation ,I take tips off a old member of our club how have kept gouldians for a very long time , and what he says I try and mimic the best that I can . so you are right in what you said about that lady you got your first gouldians off, her birds are the best you seen . I am the same with my old bud he wins shows and gives talks to zoos about Australian finches, he soaks the same seed as he feeds them a very good seed. at the end of the day if your birds and mine are doing well why change the formula. most important thing is the birds are healthy and well. in other words spoilt yours faithfully DAN

Thanks again for commenting, Jeanie

hi Jean Dan here, just like to ask you Jean why you do not use the seed for sprouting that you feed your birds, you just got me a bit puzzled. as mentioned before I use a baby sterilizing fluid in with the seed i soak and i use the same seed as i feed them, hope you dont mind me asking. yours faithfully DAN

Hi Dan,

I don't know exactly why I don't use the regular seed for sprouting except that I was warned in such a stern way by the breeder that I first purchased birds from not to. Her birds were and still are the most gorgeous and healthy Gouldians that I have ever seen. The seed mixtures for sprouting are not the same seeds for plain eating and the sprouts just look so healthy. I think I just enjoy giving them food that really looks good. Sorry, I forgot it was you who told me about the baby sterilizing formula. Jeanie
